Obituary

MINNEOLA-On Saturday July 14, just hours before his 82 nd birthday, Mr. Delbert Eugene Hurst, went to join his fellow truckers in that big convoy in the sky.  Born July 15 th , 1936 to Hurl and Lila Hurst in Powhattan, KS, he was the youngest of 3 children.  After completing the 10 th grade Delbert set out on what would become a grand life adventure taking him all over the country, be it trucking, dispatching, or smoozing corporate big wigs to win trucking contracts for his company Hurst, Inc.

Delbert could be described in many ways.  To some he was the best friend anyone could have, to others a grandfather who was always excited to teach and share his knowledge, to his wife Alyce of the last 23 years a loyal and loving husband, to his community a friendly face and a wonderful neighbor, and to his customers a man of his word who would always go the extra mile to get the job done.  His firm yet welcoming hand shake and warm smile was always there to greet you and no matter what was going on, he always had the time to lend his ear and share his wisdom when needed or lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

Delbert enjoyed many things in life, though the open road was near the top of his list.  He spent many hours behind the wheel of a Peterbilt, or as he would say "The greatest truck ever made" traveling all over this great country, his Harley Softtail, and even just driving around town in his pickup.  In his later years he joined a group of men at the Corner Store for coffee and at the Senior Center to shoot pool.  He was a whiz with his hands and was always tinkering away in his garage, where he kept things so clean you could eat off the engine of his truck.

Delbert was preceded in death by both his father Hurl and mother Lila, his brother Robert Hurst and sister Donna Reasoner.  He is survived by his wife Alyce Hurst, married February 14, 1995 in Las Vegas, his children and step children, numerus grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

His memorial service will take place at the Minnis Mortuary Minneola, Kansas Friday, July 20 th at 10 am.  The family would like to ask that any donations be made to the Minneola Community Hospital in care of Minnis Mortuary, P.O. Box 459, Minneola, Kansas 67865, as the care received at the hospital went above and beyond what was expected of them.  The family thanks everyone who was a part of Delbert's life and appreciate your love, prayers, and support.
