Obituary

BUCKLIN – Doris Scott, 95, was ushered into the presence of Jesus on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at Hill Top House, Bucklin.

She was born September 4, 1926 at Wichita, the daughter of J.W. Esli and Rita (Resing) Stogsdill.  She grew up in the Quaker faith and tradition after moving to the family home which was located very close to Friends University and University Friends Church.  She was a 1943 graduate of Wichita East High School.  She followed in her parent's steps and became a successful Educator. In 1947 she graduated from Friends University, and in 1968 received her Master's degree from Emporia State University.  She moved to southwest Kansas in 1947 to teach school at Kingsdown High School and taught English, French and Speech at Bucklin High School from 1960-1979. After a brief respite from teaching, she taught for one year, Sophomore English, at Dodge City High School. She entered the special education arena and worked as a gifted education teacher in Bucklin and traveled to area schools; Ashland, Fowler and Minneola. Education was most important to her and she gave many years to the profession.  Later, she also worked at Cossell Rader Insurance Agency.

She was a member of the Kingsdown Presbyterian Church for over 70 years and United Methodist Women in Bucklin.  Although she had her teaching degree and was an educator over the years, she was a student in her own right, always reading and challenging herself to more information. She had a highly intelligent mind and memory. She had a beautiful voice and was an accomplished pianist and played for many years for worship service at her church. She retired from that service when she was 92 years young.  Music was a valuable and necessary part of her life.  She loved the hymns. Doris had many hobbies that kept her active and engaged.  She enjoyed reading and it was very evident as you could find her nose in a book quite frequently.  She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, and her favorite TV shows were Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. She also helped with the local spelling bee and was a moderator for quiz bowl competitions. The Scott family that she married into was and still are avid sports attendees and participants. Without a doubt she did not share that same love of sports. However, she was faithful to lend her support, and very often she could be seen sitting in the stands crocheting to make the most of her time.  While teaching at BHS, she struggled because she was an English teacher and that department did not generally get the same enthusiasm as the sports programs.  She quickly learned that she could not fight the establishment and did what she could to boost and maximize the education of her students in the classroom.  Doris also loved to travel abroad. She went two times to Europe, once to England, Brazil and she and Johnny went to Australia and New Zealand. Also, they took trips around the United States to visit family.

Doris met her future husband, John F. Scott, after she went to Kingsdown for her first teaching assignment after graduation from Friends University.  On November 28, 1948 they married at University Friends Church in Wichita. Johnny was a farmer and this was quite a transition for the city girl.  She did her best to convert John, to get him a wider view, much different from the farm. He mostly was a good sport and dressed up to go when she would buy tickets to the theatre and Community Concert programs.  Johnny preceded her in death on October 2, 2011.

Doris will be greatly missed and left her family a strong heritage and legacy. Survivors include: her 3 children, Sue Kirk, Bucklin, Jim Scott and wife Jan, Dodge City and Rob Scott and wife Sue, Bucklin; 8 grandchildren, Becky Price and husband Travis, Tyler Kirk and wife Lori, Wade Kirk and wife Sarah, Jordan Gwaltney and husband Kevin, Tanner Scott and wife Meggie, Jaime Moyer and husband Rick, Toby Scott and wife Gina and Michael Scott and wife Mallorie; 25 great grandchildren; Abbigale Vanderree and husband Landon, Janae Powell and husband Trever, Jared Scott, Danae Scott, Scott Price, Maci Kirk, Makenna Scott, Madison Gwaltney, Kaylee Moyer, Lucas Kirk, Halli Price, Whitney Scott, Emmerson Kirk, Eli Moyer, Alyssa Gwaltney, Cami Kirk,  Issac Moyer, Reece Scott, Raegan Gwaltney, Everett Scott, Eleanor Scott, Esli Scott, Emilia Scott, Easton Scott, and Elaina Scott. 2 great great granddaughters Kendall Vanderree and Austynn Powell.
