Obituary

MINNEOLA, KANSAS - Etheled L. Mauch (Edde) died peacefully at the Minneola Long Term Care Unit on Friday, September 3, 2021.  Over her 101 years of life she lived and witnessed many amazing events. She would have turned 102 on September 10 th , 2021.

Edde was a woman of many nick-names (Sis, Dimple, Sally) but her most important title was "Mom".  Etheled Lacey Mauch was born September 10, 1919 in Ness County, Kansas, the daughter of Edward and Ethel (Kanaga) Mauch. She graduated from Ness City High School.  She attended Emporia State Teachers College where she earned an Associate's Teaching Degree.  Her teaching years were spent in elementary schools in Ransom, Montezuma, Ensign and Dodge City.

On August 8, 1948 she married C.E. "Butch" Marshall in Dodge City, KS.  After their marriage she retired from teaching, and they moved to the family farm southeast of Minneola, where she was a farm wife and mother of three. They lived on the family farm for 42 years, until they moved to Minneola in the spring, just before Butch's death in April of 1990.

Edde was very active in the local community.  After Butch's death, she was unanimously nominated to fill the unexpired term of his County Commissioner's seat, and then went on to serve two terms of her own.  She was also an active member in numerous clubs in Minneola, including Eastern Star (Worthy Matron), Garden Club, Farmerettes, and an honorary member of the Civic Club.  She was also a long time member of the Minneola United Methodist Church, and taught Sunday school for several years. Edde and Butch were active supporters and members of the Midian Shrine Club for many years.  They worked tirelessly over the years, and loved helping with many of the wonderful events that the Shriners supported and were involved with to help sick children.

During two summers in the 1940's, before she was married, she stayed with her brother Glenn Mauch and his family in Englewood, Colorado.  She had to take several different bus routes to get to The Brown Palace Hotel in Denver where she worked as an elevator operator.  She met several celebrities of the 40's, while working at The Brown Palace, one of whom was Bob Hope.

Over Edde's, nearly 102 years of life, she enjoyed many hobbies, which included her love of flowers, and working in her flower gardens; both in town and on the farm.  She also loved her large vegetable garden at the farm, which came in very handy when preparing homemade meals for long ago wheat harvests. Her talent and love of sewing and baking were very important to her. She made beautiful draperies and quilts.  Family and friends would often ask her to make her famous cinnamon rolls and pies for them. Her angel food cakes were asked for over the years by her children, grandchildren, and other family members who were celebrating their birthdays.  However, without a doubt Mom's most loved and favorite time, anytime, was being with and taking care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include three children, Jan Ripberger and husband Rick of Tucson, AZ, Connie Moody and husband Bo of Trophy Club, TX, Rick Marshall and wife Peggy of Dodge City, KS; her sister Vada Amy of Minneola; six grandchildren, Alison Alvidrez, Jeff Vrtiska, Erin Ragsdale, Jared Moody, Kody Marshall, and Katie Salmans; ten great grandchildren, Justin, Coltin, and Savana Alvidrez, Ciara Shelley, Jameson Westenskow, Eli Moody, Orren and Kaidyn Ragsdale, and Scarlett and Arlo Salmans. Etheled was preceded in death by her husband Butch on April 16, 1990, her parents, and five of her siblings, Hollis Mauch, Clair Mauch, Glenn Mauch, Thayne "Buzz" Mauch, and Vada's twin sister Verda McCune.
