Obituary

Dr. Halburt Linwood Dewell passed away peacefully on October 23, 2020 at 12:34 am, surrounded by family. He was 88 years old.

Hal was born in Fowler, Kansas on October 30, 1931 to Ralph William and Dorothy Grace (Shelhammer) Dewell. He was the seventh child of ten children born to them.

As a child, Hal was known as "cotton" because his hair was so blond. After graduating from Bucklin High School in 1949, Hal worked in construction with his brother Lyman for two years, then enlisted in the Air Force, where he was first located at the Great Lakes base. He then was transferred to England and from there proposed to Joyce in a letter. They were married in Fairford England in 1953 (the year Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth) and lived in Cirencester (Glouchester County). After the service, he attended Dodge City Community College and during this time, Scott was born in Bucklin in 1954. Hal finished his degree at Emporia State with a Bachelor of Science then went on to Dental School at UMKC, graduating in 1962. He opened a dental office in Eureka, Kansas. Krista was born in Hutchinson in 1964, Susan in Wichita in 1966 and Jana in Wichita in 1967. Hal practiced dentistry for 34 years until retiring in 1996. Hal was an involved member of the community in Eureka, serving on the Board of Education for nearly 10 years, organizing Red Cross blood drives, fund raisers for the American Cancer Society, and attending his daughters' school activities and sporting events.

Hal & Joyce moved to Branson soon after and built their house in 1998. Hal worked at Thousand Hills selling condos for several years, and a few other odd jobs along the way. He celebrated his 70 th birthday in 2001 with a surprise party, which many friends and his family attended. Throughout his life, Hal was focused on family and was especially proud to be part of the Dewell clan, affectionately known as 9D. He also had a great sense of humor and loved telling jokes and finding ways to make people smile or laugh. He was always optimistic and gave great bear hugs with a hearty slap on the back to go with it. Hal was a member of the Lions Club and American Legion.

Preceeding Hal in death were his parents Ralph & Dorothy Dewell (Bucklin, KS), his children Scott Carey and Krista Ann Dewell, three brothers Bill Dewell (Fowler, KS), Lyman Dewell (Colorado Springs, CO), and Duke Dewell (Fowler, KS), 5 brothers-in-law Jim Eaton (Lenexa, KS), Jake Hoffman (Dodge City, KS), Ray Fisher (Bucklin, KS), Harold McCarty (Napa, CA), and Kenneth Birney (Phonix, AZ), 5 sisters-in-law (Wynona McCarty (Napa, CA), Lorane Birney (Phoenix, AZ), Sharon Dewell (CO), Marilyn Dewell (Colorado Springs, CO), and Melv Dewell (Fowler, KS), his parents-in-law James E.
