Karol Kaye
(Hoskinson) Lies
Jan 29, 1939 — May 29, 2026
Minneola
MINNEOLA - Karol Kaye (Hoskinson) Lies, 87, beloved Mother, Grandma, Gigi, and Friend to all, passed away May 29, 2026, at her home in Minneola, KS. She was born January 29, 1939, in a sod house in rural Gray County, the daughter of Harold Raymond and Thelma Oneita (Armentrout) Hoskinson. She was the 6th of 11 children growing up on the family farm. She graduated from Ingalls High School in 1957 and immediately began her banking career at First National Bank in Dodge City.
Karol married Rodney Lies on June 15, 1960, at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Dodge City. The family moved to Minneola in 1972 to engage in farming. Karol continued working at First National Bank until 1976 when she was offered a position at Peoples State Bank in Minneola. She worked at that bank, which became Centera Bank in 2005, until her retirement at the age of 83 in 2022. During her 62 years in the banking world her bank customers became cherished friends.
Throughout her life, family was always Karol’s passion. Her kind heart and generous spirit made everyone she knew feel they were loved and appreciated. Her community loyalty shined in so many ways — holding the office of Treasurer of Minneola’s annual Community Day celebration for 50 years, serving on the USD 219 Board of Education, preparing many, many roasters of sloppy joes for athletic events, baking her famous home-made chocolate sheet cake for any
occasion, and consistently volunteering whenever and wherever there was a need. In addition to her civic contributions, Karol always made time for the young people as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the sunshine in her life. Her children and grandchildren were blessed to routinely receive a “just checking in” text from her, to which she expected a prompt reply. Over the years, countless Minneola school children affectionately called her “GrandmaKarol.”
She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Dodge City and was actively involved in the Church Choir.
Survivors include three children: Brian and Joyce Lies of Kingman, KS, Laurie & Kirby Minor of Minneola, KS, and Brent and Rene Lies of Cheney, KS; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren plus one to make her appearance in August; two brothers, Dan Hoskinson of Siloam Springs, AR, and Joe Hoskinson of Garden City, KS; and many nieces and nephews. Karol was preceded in death by her husband, Rod, who died October 25, 2006, her parents,
granddaughter Brooke Minor, great-grandson Ryker Goering, sisters Margaret Renick and Thelma “Toke” Heiman, and brothers Harold Hoskinson, Jr., Ron Hoskinson, Leonard Hoskinson, Richard Hoskinson, Chuck Hoskinson, and Melvin Hoskinson.
Rosary will be at 10:00 am Friday, June 5, 2026 followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30 both at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Dodge City, with Fr. Wesley Schawe presiding. Burial will follow the Mass in the Appleton Township Cemetery south of Minneola. Visitation with the family present will be Thursday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Minnis Mortuary, Minneola. There will be a time of sharing at 6:00 pm Thursday at the Mortuary.
The family suggests memorials to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe “Preparing A Place” (Building fund for the new school), Minneola Community Days or USD 219 Activities all in care of Minnis Mortuary, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
