Obituary

MINNEOLA - Samuel Reed Hindman was born April 11, 1925, in Galion, Ohio to John and Stella (Anderson) Hindman. He passed from this life on July 16, 2023, in Minneola, Kansas at the age of 98.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Paul, Bob, Dave and sister Mary (Humphreys) along with many other friends, mentors and relatives.

On August 29, 1950 he married Carol Edgar in Sterling, Kansas. She survives. He is also survived by children: Alvin (Diane), Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; Anita Curry (Wayne), Topeka, Kansas; Mark (Laurie), North Richland Hills, Texas; Janice Martin (Bob), Denver, Pennsylvania and Joe (Erin), Trinity, Florida; 16 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren with four more to be born within the next few months.

Reed moved from Ohio to Minneola, Kansas in 1946 where he worked for local farmer, Frank Tedford. In 1949 he attended Sterling College where he did not earn a degree, but found something far more useful to him-his wife Carol. Shortly after their marriage in 1950, Reed left to serve in the U.S. Army in Germany as part of Allied forces preventing Russian aggression into Europe.

Upon returning from the Army, Reed again worked for a local farmer before venturing out on his own to farm. He would continue farming until "retiring" in 2005. Reed's passion for farming was only superseded by his strong Christian faith and his love for family. He was a member of the Reformed Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder for 57 years. His faith in Jesus Christ directed all aspects of his life from his emphasis on stewardship of the land to leading his children to a faith of their own.

Reed also served his community on the Minneola Hospital Board where he was instrumental in bringing about the Minneola Long Term Care facility where he would spend the last 3 years of his life.

The family wishes to express appreciation to the Minneola Healthcare teams for their excellent care and love shown to Reed.

A private burial will be held.  A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 2:00 pm at the Minneola Community Church.

In honor of Reed, memorial contributions may be given to the Minneola Long Term Care or the Sterling Reformed Presbyterian Church both in care of Minnis Mortuary, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, Kansas 67801.
